Roku Industry Icon Award 2026
Shingo Gokan
Raising a generation – Gokan’s global legacy
Tokyo born and Kanagawa raised, Gokan began bartending at 18, not from romantic ambition but from a practical instinct to learn a skill. More than two decades later, he has become one of the most influential figures in modern cocktail culture: a bartender, bar creator, mentor and global hospitality entrepreneur whose influence extends from Tokyo and Shanghai to New York and Hong Kong, with a mythology that stretches around the world.
Gokan's formative years were defined by self-education. He taught himself cocktails in Japan, becoming head bartender by the age of 20, before moving through Ginza, where he studied tea ceremony, sherry and the rituals of Japanese service. At the fresh age of 23, he moved to New York and was initially rejected by the already legendary Japanese-American bar Angel's Share due to his lack of English skills. Within months, he had become head bartender elsewhere; soon after, Angel's Share came back for him. He would spend about a decade there, absorbing the energy of New York's cocktail revival while refining the quiet precision of Japanese bartending.
That hybrid became his signature. His 2012 Bacardi Legacy win with his creation Speak Low – a drink built around rum, sherry, yuzu and matcha – transformed him from respected New York bartender into an international name. Suddenly he was travelling, guest bartending and representing a new kind of global bartender: technically rigorous, culturally fluent and fiercely entrepreneurial.
In 2014, he opened Speak Low in Shanghai, named after his competition-winning cocktail. Then came Sober Company, The SG Club, The Odd Couple, Gokan, Sangai and his first New York venture Sip & Guzzle. Venues that were conceived as complete worlds where the drink, room, service, ingredients, soundtrack and narrative are each designed to reinforce one another in turn.
Awards have followed: International Bartender of the Year at Tales of the Cocktail, Altos Bartenders' Bartender 2019 and Roku Industry Icon 2021 awards in Asia's 50 Best Bars, and repeated rankings for his bars across global lists. Beyond awards, mentorship is Gokan's most tangible legacy. Celebrated bartenders including Double Chicken Please's GN Chan, Takuma Watanabe of Martiny's, Speak Low acolyte Kris Du and SG Group's beverage director Yuya Nagamine have all either worked under him, been championed by him or found their understanding of bartending altered by his example.
Taking the global award of Roku Industry Icon for The 50 Best Bars 2026, Gokan's career traces a remarkable arc: self-taught teenager, immigrant bartender, Angel's Share leader, world competition champion, bar owner, mentor and international operator. Most importantly, someone who, at every stage, he has treated bartending as both craft and culture, redefining what a bar can look like, inspiring a multitude along the way.
