Martiny's

New York

Angel’s Share heritage with a Manhattan twist

Martiny's bar occupies the old New York City pad of Beaux-Arts sculptor Phillippe Martiny. In the modern age, the bar sculpted its own masterpiece and remains a temple of sophistication.

The Gramercy Park lounge resides within a restored 1800's carriage house, conjuring both Gotham's Gilded Age and Japanese elegance. Despite occupying all three floors, the atmosphere is decidedly intimate. Exposed brick, pressed tin ceilings, embossed wallpaper and dark woods combine to transform the low-lit space into an urban oasis. The cherrywood bar, plush upholstered chairs and banquettes offer tactile luxury. But the greatest warmth emanates from the talented team led by Takuma Watanabe. Watanabe's prior work at the legendary Angel's Share helped introduce New York City to Japanese omotenashi style hospitality. At Martiny's he has perfected the art.

From the warm oshibori towels upon arrival to the Kimura crystal, every detail is deliberate and meticulous. Inside the crystal glasses lies the real opus. The ice is hand carved and the drinks stirred and tasted to Watanabe's exacting standards. Consider the trademark Grand Martiny's, a delicate dance of gin, sherry, port and cognac. The team flashes its creativity with creations like Tea Ceremony, a rhapsody of Japanese whisky, white cacao liqueur, ceremonial matcha, coconut water and shiso leaf garnish. Chef Wayne Cheng's culinary programme follows the lead, offering seductively luxurious snacks like scallop with bonito cream, or sawagani, small Japanese river crabs fried whole. Guests can also opt for the Oysters & Caviar, an exercise in understated luxury and a perfect metaphor for Martiny's.
