Wonderment in every glass
A list of Barcelona's top tourist destinations might start with Basilica of the Sagrada Família, but somewhere down the page would come Paradiso.
Celebrating its 10th birthday this year, Paradiso is a true hospitality destination. You only need pass by the queues that snake from its entrance, spilling out into El Born, to realise it. And these patient patrons are not just the young and adventurous, but admirers of all generations. So how has it done it? The truth of it is that everything Paradiso does is box office. Not least being crowned The World's Best Bar in 2022.
A big part of the allure is the whimsical entrance, which never gets old. A refrigerator door in a pastrami shop has to be one of the more creative speakeasy-esque teleportations. Beyond the door, guests are beamed into a bar with a stunning, curved wooden ceiling – shades of Dali himself – and subtle tropical accents and the artistry doesn't end there as each menu at Paradiso is more ambitious than the last. This year's is called Oltre, which translates to 'beyond'. Paradiso wants to push the cocktail experience beyond even what it has done before.
Take the Illusion cocktail, made with scotch, white and dry vermouths, sherry, banana and bitters. When the white glass it's served in comes into contact with the chilled cocktail it turns completely black. The Gala Colada, a smooth whiskey, sherry, pineapple and coconut drink, is housed in a studded glass, playing with the psychology of touch. Meanwhile when liquid is poured over the Alba cocktail, a flower blooms in the glass.
Owners Giacomo Giannotti, Margarita Sader and their talented team only know one way with cocktails, and that's making us rethink what they can be.
