Sharp cocktails in the back, tailor shop in the front
There aren't many bars in the world where you go for a cocktail and get fitted for a suit. At Sastrería Martinez in Miraflores in Lima, this dual concept fits together snugly – you enter the bar through a tailor shop, one of the speakeasy category's most impressive transportations.
But first you must speak to the tailor to be measured up for your suit, which can be made by one Lima's best workshops, Atelier Firenze, or to receive the password, which gives you access to one of the most vibrant speakeasies in the world.
It's not small. In front of you are clusters of tables with comfortable seats, to one side an imposing bar and to the other a stage with a band in full Latin song. If owner Diageo Martinez is around, you'll spot him by his debonair demeanour – his suits, as you might imagine, are impeccably tailored.
This is the kind of place to stretch out the legs and settle in for the evening. The bar food is some of the best around and the inventive cocktails – often spins on classics – draw from two inspirations: Peruvian textiles and Peruvian ingredients.
Peru is a country of six biomes – from deserts to grasslands to tropical forests – and so Sastrería Martinez's menu explores each, telling the story of the country's rich cornucopia. If that is the palette, the inspiration behind the cocktails is Peruvian textiles, with flavours, colours and texture woven into each drink. Try the Mr. Martínez – an updated version of the house signature, using 18-year-old whisky, vermouth, blueberry syrup, coffee, lacto-fermented papaya and cinnamon.
