Tan Tan
São Paulo
A bona fide Asian experience in Brazil
Effortlessly infusing Asian cultures across all its menus, Tan Tan's authentic vibes simultaneously attract liqueur-loving drinkers, business people and fun-loving friends in São Paulo, the metropolis that's home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.
Starting life as a ramen bar conceived by chef Thiago Bañares, today Tan Tan takes a 50/50 approach when it comes to brainy drinks and delicious bites (and yes, you can still order a steaming bowl of chashumen). Bañares' curiosity for mixology grew into a passion, and he brought the two worlds together while drawing from his Chinese and Japanese heritages. Guests can either sit bar-side to catch the drinks team led by Caio Carvalhaes at work or at the open kitchen's counter to watch its culinary movements; there is also outdoor seating on the busy Pinheiros street as well as comfy sofas for small groups.
This year's menu, Perspective, challenges Brazilian ingredients by taking two or three and melding them to showcase differing flavours and textures. Apple and yerba maté green tea are the perfect example of cocktails and mocktails, so why not order them both? Tan Tan classics from previous menus are preserved in a hall of fame; try the tequila and lapsang souchong-led Hello Suckers or the cachaça-forward Dirty Dance.
As for dining, all appetites are covered. Notable bar snacks are shokupan and mentikatsu meatballs, while aka teba (fried chicken wings with homemade sweet chilli sauce) and dan dan mian pork noodles are designed for dinner.
