Haras De Pirque
Santiago, Chile
Welcome to Chilean cowboy country. Haras de Pirque was a working stud farm for more than 100 years before Piero Antinori established a winery here in 2001 – and the estate wears its history like a rosette of honour. A thoroughbred racetrack encircles the vineyards, while the winery itself is shaped like a horseshoe, its metal roof seemingly hewn by a giant blacksmith and set squarely at the heart of the property. With the august Andes on one side and the Maipo Valley opening out spectacularly on the other, it's quite the arena; and with a legendary Tuscan wine family in the saddle, this is hardly its first rodeo. A host of tours and tasting experiences are available, including wine-blending workshops, treks through the Andean foothills and sunset dinners at restaurant Hussonet, which shares its name with the estate's superstar stud of years gone by. The sip to savour? Albis, a flagship cabernet sauvignon–carménère blend that marries Maipo Valley terroir with the Antinori family's Old World winemaking heritage.
