Vietti
Castiglione, Italy
Since the late 19th century, the historic Vietti winery has been the crowning glory of Castiglione Falletto, a hilltop village in the province of Cuneo – but though it may have matured to a ripe old age, this is a curiously creative Barolo house that's steered by, rather than anchored to, the traditions of the past. Back in the 60s and 70s, the estate's serial innovator was Alfredo Currado, a man who put Vietti on the map with three strokes of genius: a pioneering single-vineyard Barolo; a wine made solely from the overlooked Arneis grape; and a series of wines distinguished by contemporary label art. Visitors can embark on a selection of guided winery tours, including an Experience tasting spanning a host of rare vintages; however, the vineyard trail is perhaps the estate's most evocative offering. Timed to coincide with sunrise or sunset over the Langhe, this scenic walk takes guests through three of the site's most prized parcels – one of which is home to an enormous Big Bench by American designer Chris Bangle. What better place to admire the view?
