Fyn Restaurant

Cape Town, South Africa

The 50
  • Accolades
  • No.37 The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022

A cavernous industrial space on the fifth floor of a repurposed building, with a glass wall offering sensational views of Lion's Head and Table Mountain and a cloud of wooden discs hanging from the ceiling, is the setting for one of Cape Town's most gastronomically adventurous addresses. Chef Peter Tempelhoff's mission is to blur boundaries by interpreting South Africa through techniques largely rooted in Japan. He spent 10 years away from South Africa, studying at the Culinary Institute of America, then gaining experience in some of London's best restaurants. In 2008, he took a trip to Japan, which changed his cooking ethos, before getting the chance to open Fyn in 2018. Canapés served in petite bento boxes have included prawn crudo with dashi mayo and grilled shishito peppers, while the rest of the kaiseki-style tasting menus are packed with familiar Japanese ingredients such as candied ginger, crispy tempura nori and salted plum.
