James McBride

The hotelier who let luxury run wild

James McBride is one of luxury hospitality's most compelling modern figures, shaped by a career that treads a renegade path between disciplined operator, entrepreneur, storyteller and creator of one of the most emotionally resonant resorts in the world.

Over more than three decades, he has worked across continents and at the highest levels of the industry, before making his vast learnings manifest in the physical culmination of his life's work: Nihi Sumba.

Born in South Africa, McBride studied hotel management before continuing his education at Cornell and later Harvard Business School. His early career at Ritz-Carlton gave him a rigorous understanding of operational excellence: consistency, detail, anticipation and the choreography of service. He went on to senior roles with Rosewood, including at Grosvenor House in London and The Carlyle in New York, before becoming president of YTL Hotels, where he helped develop an international portfolio of luxury properties.

In 2012, he partnered with entrepreneur Christopher Burch to acquire and transform Nihiwatu, a remote surf retreat on the Indonesian island of Sumba. McBride's journey from the polished capitals of Europe and the US to a remote atoll marked a turning point in his approach to what was then considered traditional luxury.

His genius was knowing what not to polish away. The remoteness, the horses on the beach, the surf break, the Sumbanese villages, the raw landscape and the sense of being far from the ordinary were not inconveniences to be disguised; they were the essence of the experience.

McBride's approach turned the destination itself into the luxury product. Rather than building a resort that could be replicated anywhere, he created something inseparable from Sumba. Reborn as Nihi Sumba, the property became less a hotel than a philosophy: luxury rooted in place, culture, emotion and adventure.

Burch described him as someone who can think through multiple layers of a customer's needs and, importantly, 'think about the heart'. That human lens shapes everything at Nihi Sumba – the way guests move through the island, the way staff tell stories, the way experiences feel spontaneous but are carefully orchestrated.

McBride recognises that independent hotels cannot rely on a flag or loyalty scheme and instead must create desire through meaning. Nihi's famous horses galloping along the sand isn't a marketing idea, it is a memorable experience that becomes a memory guests carry home.

The overall vision is that a hotel should not dominate its setting, but reveal it. This has led to McBride being recognised as one of the hotel world's leading lights and living legends, from being named Independent Hotelier of the World by Hotels magazine in 2016 to his latest accolade of SevenRooms Icon Award winner at The 50 Best Hotels 2026.
