Modernist desert retreat carved into the Colorado Plateau

What's the wow factor? Amangiri sits on more than 900 acres of the Colorado Plateau at Canyon Point, Utah, near Lake Powell, and was designed by architects Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette and Rick Joy to settle into rather than dominate the surrounding sandstone formations.

The resort's 34 suites blend concrete, stone and timber with the desert's raw materials, finished in white stone floors and blackened steel fittings. Each has an outdoor lounge and fireplace facing the landscape, and some add a private pool or roof terrace; the central pavilion's swimming pool is set directly against the mesa.

Which suite to book: Options include the Girijaala Suite, with mountain-ridge views and its own pool terrace, the Orchard Suite at 93-square metres and the Mesa Pool Suite, with a private pool, courtyard day bed and sky terrace. The Amangiri Suite adds its own lap pool, sun deck and outdoor lounge, while a Four-Bedroom Mesa Home offers a private infinity pool for families and groups. Camp Sarika, the resort's adjoining tented camp, offers ten further pavilions, each with a private plunge pool, with full access to the main resort's spa.

Food and drink: The resort's main restaurant serves a seasonal menu inspired by American Southwest cuisine from an open kitchen and wood-fired oven, including a four-course tasting menu paying tribute to the region's indigenous tribes. Camp Sarika has its own restaurant for guests staying there, with full-board dining included throughout the property.

What about a signature spa? The 25,000-square-foot Aman Spa includes a water pavilion with a steam room, sauna, plunge pool and heated step pool, a flotation pavilion for guided relaxation and a dedicated Pilates and yoga studio. Signature experiences include Yoga on the Rocks, a sunrise hike to a desert formation, and guided mindfulness walks. More than 12 miles of waymarked trails cross the property with a Navajo guide on hand to lead walks through three nearby slot canyons.
