East meets West on the shores of the Bosphorus

What's the story? Set along the Bosphorus in the revitalised Galataport waterfront district, the hotel occupies four buildings across beautiful landscaped gardens: three restored heritage structures – Çinili Han (1910–11), Merkez Rıhtım Han (1912), and the former Karaköy Passenger Terminal, originally designed by architect Rebii Gorbon and opened in 1940 – plus a newly built wing. With 177 rooms and suites, uninterrupted Bosphorus views, and one of Istanbul's most coveted addresses, it offers a rare pocket of calm in a city of 16 million.

Designed to impress: Turkish designer Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu led the interiors, seamlessly blending the three historic buildings with the new addition via marble, brass, glass and ceramic tilework. Original details have been preserved throughout: the Bauhaus-influenced features of Gorbon's 1940s terminal are reflected even in the elevator light casings, while Çinili Han is clad in more gold tiles than the Blue Mosque. The rooftop clock tower still keeps time using its original mechanism, designed by Mustafa Şem-i, watchmaker to Sultan Abdülhamid II. 

Views and vistas: There's a particular magic to breakfast on the waterfront terrace, watching ferries and yachts trace lazy paths across the Bosphorus – a ritual best repeated at dusk, cocktail in hand, as the strait turns molten gold. For the ultimate flourish, guests can step aboard Pen 1, the hotel's private 16-metre mahogany motor yacht. From discreet private transfers to leisurely cruises along the coast, it offers an entirely unique way to experience the city, with up to sixteen guests sailing in style as the skyline reveals itself from every angle.

To eat: The Peninsula Istanbul's dining spans four venues, three of them located within the restored 1940s former passenger terminal building. The Lobby serves all-day Mediterranean-inspired cuisine alongside Turkish classics (don't miss the Çılbır – poached eggs with garlic yoghurt, spicy olive oil and red pepper flakes). Rooftop Gallada delivers a Turk-Asian, Silk Road–inspired menu from acclaimed chef Fatih Tutak. The pick of the menu? The steamed dumpling trio comprising lobster, 'Adana' kebab and morel mushroom.

New for 2026, Abelia, the hotel's alfresco poolside restaurant, has launched a residency with Spanish chef Diego Guerrero of DSTAgE in Madrid, bringing his contemporary Spanish Mediterranean cuisine to hotel residents.
