5 Thanksgiving escapes where everything is handled

Trade kitchen duty for ocean views, tropical villas and luxe farmstay retreats. These family-friendly stays in North America offer standout holiday dining without the hassle.

Anyone who's ever hosted Thanksgiving will know the celebration is closer to a test of endurance than a holiday in any sense of the word: one showstopping turkey, a dozen travelling guests and a kitchen that takes all week to tidy. This may be your year to take a break for once and check in somewhere else. With Thanksgiving feasts, seasonal activities and spacious suites that balance togetherness with privacy, these stays make it easy to keep everyone entertained.

Chablé Yucatán, Chocholá

Chablé Yucatán's temazcal is a traditional healing lodge symbolising the womb of Mother Earth

Executive chef Ernesto Flores's multi-course Thanksgiving menu at Ki'ol Restaurant toasts the holiday with a multicultural accent. Expect fluffy cornbread with pecan-praline butter, Yucatecan lime soup made with turkey breast, succulent roast turkey with gravy and cranberry sauce and even pumpkin spice muffins to finish.

The more distinctive offer, though, is the temazcal: an ancient dome-shaped sweat lodge ceremony for spiritual purification. Led by traditional medicine practitioners, Chablé Yucatán's colourful brick temazcal invites you to clear the mind and reconnect with ancient wisdom amid volcanic stones scented with aromatic herbs. Few Thanksgiving dinner preludes are quite so unusual or restorative. If you see sport as a form of therapy, a few holes on the nine-hole par-3 course offer a similarly rejuvenating pursuit. Families are well served by the Royal Villa, which has a private pool terrace and a cinema of its own.

Fogo Island Inn, Joe Batt's Arm

Fogo Island Inn occupies an insulated steel-frame building that harvests rainwater from its roof for use throughout the property

Over Canadian Thanksgiving (9-13 October), Fogo Island Inn lays on a celebratory feast alongside scavenger hunts and family film screenings in its 37-seat cinema. The fine-dining meal is arguably the main event. The kitchen keeps an 80/20 rule, meaning at least 80 per cent of ingredients are fished, farmed, hunted or harvested in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the rest arriving through sustainable supply chains or the region's traditional trading partners. With past menus featuring charcoal roast moose with locally grown Brussels sprouts and hay-poached cod, there's every reason to expect this year's feast will be just as memorable.

The sense of place extends beyond the dining room. Designed by Norway-based architect Todd Saunders, every room of the inn looks out across the North Atlantic. Rooms are dressed with furniture, quilts and rugs handmade on the island, while local guides lead excursions including cod fishing and wheel-thrown pottery workshops.

Blackberry Farm, Walland

The Barn restaurant at Blackberry Farm holds over 9,000 different wine labels in its cellar

Blackberry Farm stretches Thanksgiving into a week-long celebration, with family bingo, a Turkey Trot 5K, ornament-making workshops and college football watch parties on the agenda. Meals range from traditional turkey lunches to pasta dinners paired with holiday trivia. Underpinning the estate's convivial, family-focused atmosphere is its status as a working farm.

Open since 1941 in the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, the estate grows heirloom produce, raises heritage livestock and tends the truffle orchard on-site, where two Lagotto Romagnolo dogs are trained to hunt for truffles alongside the farm team. The Barn's five-course prix fixe menu combines products harvested from the farm with ingredients sourced throughout the Appalachian region. Daily tours of the gardens, pastures and dairy barn will show you the origins of your meal before it reaches the table. Accommodation ranges from historic rooms dating back to the farm's opening – complete with vintage wallpaper and frilled bedding – to a farmhouse built from reclaimed materials from an 1800s Pennsylvania barn. Sleeping up to eight guests, the farmhouse is among many houses on site suited to multigenerational gatherings.

Nimmo Bay Resort, British Columbia

Over Canadian Thanksgiving, Nimmo Bay serves a communal turkey dinner complete with seasonal decorations and festive crafts to keep younger attendees entertained. That's largely the extent of the celebration, and intentionally so. Set in the Great Bear Rainforest on Canada's Pacific coast, Nimmo Bay lets nature take centre stage. Thanksgiving is an intimate affair, with past celebrations culminating in a gratitude circle after dinner.

Kids can head out with a dedicated guide for a day of canoeing, campfire cooking and wilderness exploration, leaving parents with time for uninterrupted fly fishing or a restorative session in the floating sauna. The largest waterfront cabins sleep up to five guests, underscoring the property's philosophy of restraint.

Montage Laguna Beach, California

Berkshire ham and roast turkey feature on the Thanksgiving menu at The Loft, Montage Laguna Beach's coastal all-day dining restaurant

Thanksgiving at Montage Laguna Beach is celebrated with a buffet-style feast in its Ballroom and an a la carte Thanksgiving menu at its beachside restaurant The Loft. With typical Californian coastal flair, this year's menu includes butternut bisque with poached pear reduction, a Dungeness crab starter with pickled persimmon, Californian chanterelles with lardons and roast turkey with focaccia stuffing, braised fresh cranberries and sage turkey gravy. If you still have room for dessert, make your way to Studio Mediterranean on the other side of the property, where pumpkin cheesecake mousse and cardamom pear cakes offer a fittingly indulgent finale to the evening.

Relaxation comes naturally here, with migrating whales and dolphins frequently visible from rooms and a programme of leisurely bike rides and gallery visits making the most of the Laguna Beach address. Just an hour's drive from both San Diego and LA, the property offers three-bedroom villas alongside cottage-like oceanfront suites, whose balconies look out onto a shoreline frequented by sea lions and harbour seals.
