Smart city slickers seeking a side of nature with their supper hot step it to Kreuzberg's Nobelhart & Schmutzig. A nondescript façade gives way to an intimate counter swathed around the perpetual motion of the open kitchen. Don't expect tuna, chocolate or lemon on your plate. If Berlin and the surrounding region can't produce it, you won't find it on Micha Schäfer's six or eight-course menus, which focus on vegetables and dairy in recipes that use no more than three or four ingredients. Anticipate inspired dishes such as suckling pig with plum and chilli; potato, braised cucumber and dill; or blueberries and juniper, with Nordic methods of preservation bolstering dishes out of season. Rockstar owner-sommelier Billy Wagner ensures your glass is never empty – there's an alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairing available, as well as an extensive 187-page drinks menu to work through, which covers everything from freshly squeezed juices to beers, infusions, cocktails and a huge number of wines.
