Achingly cool bar with inventive savoury cocktails
In Barcelona, Moe Aljaff and Juliette Larrouy collaborated to help usher in the age of culinary cocktails. In 2025, they followed up with Schmuck, bringing their style across the pond to New York City. And, in the new venture, style is key. Heralded as a house party, Schmuck's Lower East Side location attracts the coolest of kids to a sleek modern space. Gleaming stainless-steel counters offer a chic centrepiece while mid-century modern touches and low couches soften the vibe. But don't be fooled by the beautiful people. Behind the hip surroundings is one of the city's most advanced drink programmes.
Larrouy studied at Paris' famed Ferrandi Culinary School and worked in fine dining before moving to the bar. Her pedigree is evident in a savoury drinks list with thoughtful nods to the neighbourhood and her European roots. For example, the Fika pays homage to the Swedish coffee-and-pastry tradition with a careful blend of aged rum, cinnamon syrup and coffee liqueur with a cinnamon bun-style icing swirl on top. Likewise, the duo overlay their unique aesthetic on the classics with drinks like the Schmuck Martini, a frigid blend of gin, shochu, unaged apple brandy, dry vermouth and olive oil. A small kitchen turns out an eclectic menu of shareable dishes with Mediterranean roots. Many regulars prefer to enjoy standouts like the white bean cacio e pepe and the smoked labneh in a side room, dubbed The Kitchen Table. The energy pulses throughout the space; Schmuck offers a lively celebration of savoury flavours, social clubs and NYC itself.
