A tribute to an Italian grandfather and aperitivo culture

Despite opening two brief years ago, Bar Mauro has set pulses racing to pick up a slew of awards. It most recently skyrocketed to rank No.2 on The 50 Best Bars North America 2026. So what has captured drinkers' hearts and minds? Housing two timeless spaces – an intimate lobby-style bar with a few scattered tables that leads to the bijou bar – its sibling owners call it 'golden age meets new nostalgia'.

Seasoned bartending brothers Ricardo and Eduardo 'Yayo' Nava have crafted a retro-chic Italian watering hole that pays tribute to their grandfather Mauro Mendoza while also illuminating aperitivo culture. Given that the brothers still tend bar, both the experience and the ambience are highly personal. The nostalgia harks back to 1970s Italy, the decor lovingly giving protagonism to sepia photographs of a dapper Sr Mendoza, while shelves display vermouths and amari. Mirrors, vertically placed teal tiles and modernist touches are additional nods to Milan's fashion capital status appreciated by stylish regulars who have made this their home.

The drinks list references bella Italia, such as the Negroni 1929 buoyed by cacao nibs and strawberry, but there are also nods to Mexican traditions; the Basilico, for example, plays with tequila, rose vermouth, basil and peach. If in doubt, order the Maurito. As for dining, the kitchen's stuzzichini includes an impressive array of charcuterie, cheese and olives; don't feel embarrassed to order the notable burger. Come for aperitivo hour, the evening will be gone before you know it.
