Casa Cavia
Buenos Aires, Argentina
It may be housed in a Buenos Aires belle époque mansion, but Casa Cavia is pure 21st century. Set in the leafy neighbourhood of Palermo Chico, much of the dining centres around the building’s shady central courtyard, with its reflecting pool and chic alfresco bar. Interiors are as elegant, all apple green velvet seating, distressed mirrors and wooden floors. The menu varies according to what’s in season or growing in the restaurant garden: think smoked mushroom ceviche, then cauliflower tandoori, followed by roasted baby chicken with orange honey, finished off with lychee ice cream. The cocktails are also enticing, with unusual creations such as a negroni made with lemon ashes or the Falso Vino Blanco, a blend of gin, tangerine, yerba mate and chamomile. With an on-site pastry shop (there’s also a florist), the breakfasts and afternoon teas are popular – this is where Argentina’s former first lady Juliana Awada met with Michelle Obama for a cup of tea.
